Patient Satisfaction Higher with Dysport than Botox
Those of you who have read my previous blogs know I prefer Dysport over Botox. I cited many advantages including rapid onset, more natural look, more spreading of product over crow’s feet area and lower cost as reasons.
A new study released this month by Dr Rubin of Beverly Hills ,California published in Cosmetic Dermatology actually reported a head to head comparison of Dysport to Botox. Here is what was found:
Most patients reported they didn’t perceive a difference between Botox and Dysport. Among participants who expressed a preference for one product over the other, preferred Dysport. Their reasons were: “Onset of visible effects, overall improvement of skin quality in the treatment areas and a soft, smoother more natural look and smoother texture.”
While I always tell my patients my findings are anecdotal (ie my own experience) it will be nice to now quote the above article from a peer to peer journal.

Can Liposuction Improve Your Health?
New research says: Yes! Liposuction has long been considered a purely cosmetic procedure but a new study presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons meeting in Denver, CO last month suggests significant reductions in Triglycerides, thereby reducing risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
High Triglyceride levels are known to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Dr Eric Swanson the study’s author found the decrease in Triglyceride levels after liposuction was dramatic and revealed that the permanent removal of excess fat cells by liposuction has a major impact on circulating levels of Triglycerides. Patients enrolled in the study had a 43% reduction in triglyceride levels (about twice the effect achieved with a drug commonly used to reduce triglycerides).
“These findings suggest that patients who are considering liposuction who have elevated triglyceride levels may reduce their risk of developing these serious health problems, while correcting body disproportions, “said Dr. Swanson. “Patients not only look better , but may be healthier too.”
This is quite remarkable since for years it has been assumed that visceral fat surrounding the internal organs has greater metabolic importance and is more directly linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk than “subcutaneous fat” that lies under the skin. These new findings support recent studies suggesting subcutaneous fat, which can be reduced by liposuction, is just as metabolically important. This was the first of such studies and it will be interesting where further reasearch will take this. So besides feeling better about your appearance after liposuction you may also improve your health by reducing risk factors…This is a win-win situation!

Dr. Macri attended the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Anti-aging Medicine Symposium, held in June in NYC, where new techniques such as blunt non-bruising needles, Periorbital Rejuvenation, and the new, non-injection Topical Botox Gel RT001, were discussed and demonstrated. Anti-wrinkle fillers, or dermal fillers, is a procedure that uses injections to fill out the wrinkles in a patient’s face. Dermal fillers achieve a natural look and a more youthful appearance for the patient.
After using the new product, Dr. Macri says, “In the past, bruising and pain resulted from dermal filler injection using traditional sharp needles, but this has now been eliminated using the blunt non-bruising needle.”
Traditional injection of dermal fillers involves using a sharp needle that cuts as it passes under the skin. Do you remember this catchy advertising slogan from Clairol in the 1960′s?
In this blog I’ll address that now Botox treatments are more main stream than when first FDA approved in 2002. Botox treatments have a history of being veiled in secrecy and viewed as an indulgence for the elite and vain, similar to the past conception of hair coloring. Despite its meteoric rise in popularity as an aesthetic procedure, with use increasing more than 3800% in a decade there has been a stigmata of vanity associated with patients who receive treatment with Botox. This misconception has been steadily decreasing over time in large part because of increased public awareness and a decrease in cost of treatment, shifting it from a luxury for the rich to a therapy for all who desire it. In many ways, the acceptance and popularity of Botox appear to be evolving in a similar fashion to the rise of hair coloring in America.
So I’ll now refer to the study above from Cosmetic Dermatology June 2011 where Dr Dyan and others gave patients who were about to undergo treatment with Botox and Dysport a 4 question survey to 134 patients. In this study 70% of woman dyed their hair.
Although hair coloring is very popular today, it was once a clandestine practice of the wealthy or those considered vain. The use of Botox injections appears to be following a similar evolution as that observed with hair coloring. The appealing face shaping benefits of raising the brow, nose and oral commissures are replacing the image of the frozen Botox face. Many Hollywood celebrities are now admitting to receiving Botox treatment and treatment popularity is increasing.
Not only do both hair coloring and Botox treatment enhance beauty, but both have been implicated to influence social interactions through the projection of a more youthful or postive appearance.
Just as hair coloring shed its stigma of being for the elite or vain, so too are Botox injections shedding stereotypes.
So the final answer to Does She or Doesn’t She?… Maybe?… Only her Doctor knows for sure!
